BIOGRAPHY OF CLAUDIO BERNARDO
Artistic Director- Choreographer
Claudio Bernardo was born in 1964, in Fortaleza (North east of Brazilia), where he started to study dance at the age of fifteen. He then trained in ballet and modern dance in Sao Paulo. In 1983, he danced in the Company of Victor Navarro in Rio de Janeiro. In 1986, he decided to go to Europe. He got in Maurice Béjart’s School, Mudra, where he made his first steps in choreography.
A few years later, he danced in the Compagnie du Plan K , directed by Frédéric Flamand. In 1989, Usdum got the SACD prize of the Fesival Bruxelles Central and in 1992 Raptus won the prize of the Festival Experimental du Caire. In 1995, after five years of facilities offered by the Théâtre de L’Atelier Saint Anne in Brussels, he created his own company, As Palavras-Cie Claudio Bernardo.
As a recognized choreograph also in Brazil, he was asked to choreograph for several Brazilian companies. Therefore, at the request of Antonio Carlos Cardoso, director of the Ballet de Bahia , he created, in 2001, L’Archive et la Mission, piece for eighteen dancers, which has been performed many times in national and international tours. In 1997, Claudio Bernardo set up his company in Mons where he never stopped creating and performing dance pieces as well as sharing his knowledge and experience by giving workshops and classes. He has accomplished so far a great deal of work for Contemporary Dance in the Communauté Française de la Belgique (French community of Belgium).
